Learning to win at the game of freelancing

The game of freelancing is something that everybody struggles with. Making a life as a freelancer is, for many people, doing what you love. But it’s not just about this component. You need to be on the lookout for opportunities to improve your career and just skills. As a blogger, there will be an abundance of guest blogging opportunities that you know could open doors. But this is one aspect of a bigger entity. Being an effective freelancer is about operating with the right mindset.

It’s not just about one career path

It’s important to remember this. When you are freelancing, you may feel that you just need to stick to one area. The reality is that there will be times when you are not able to do what you really want. But this is where you can start to diversify your efforts. For example, there is absolutely nothing wrong with being a freelance driver while also being a freelance blogger! With websites like Shiply, you have the opportunity to bid for shipping jobs. And this works in the same way that an eBay auction works as well as other freelance websites. If you get into the habit of bidding for freelance jobs every morning when you wake up, this gives you the motivation to get up, while also ensuring that you are diversifying your career path.

Focus on the soft skills

We have relied on email and LinkedIn to get us most of our work. The difference between you and someone else vying for the same job all boils down to personality. If you are looking to make a big difference in how you work and get jobs, you’ve got to fine-tune your communication. Understanding clients’ needs are pivotal in the freelance world. When you are sending emails out to clients asking for work, you should consider following it up with a phone call. The great thing is that there are many ways for you to practice your soft skills. You can take a look at this quiz to see how strong your soft skills really are.

Marketing your brand

You should also think about how you promote your skills and abilities. One of the biggest mistakes people make as a freelancer is they don’t consider themselves as a commodity. If you are looking to beat the competition, you’ve got to learn how to promote yourself effectively. The importance of crafting that elevator pitch is something that you need to have at the back of your mind, should you be in that position. Promoting yourself is about networking, which is where your soft skills will come in handy, but also realising that you are marketing yourself as well as your work. This requires an inherent understanding of who you are. And this is where we can fall down because we ended up hiding behind emails. In order to win the freelancing game, promoting yourself is about being the person you are.

The importance of being an effective freelancer is not just about motivating yourself at home, but it’s about realizing that every moment counts.

    Hello Mudassir,
I have never done freelance work but I do like to keep my options open. I did the quiz you linked and scored a 10/10 on my soft skills according to the quiz. Interesting since this is the first time encountering that term. I have always just thought it was communicating. I really do learn something new everyday!
I think we forget that we are valuable and have something to offer that is worth promoting, but we must constantly work to grow and expand our skill set!

Oh wow! Congrats on the quiz score. Skills like Collaboration, Communication, the ability to realize our potential and hone it, and timely decisions can make you an in-demand freelancer over time.

Appreciate sharing this with your social network and dropping this comment, SharlaAnn.

It all breaks down to having the right mindset – Enjoy what you do, focus on improving skills, and the money eventually follows. Thanks for putting your thoughts, Andrew.

  3. These are really good points! They’re true too. Not only is freelancing not just about one career path, freelancing can help you create multiple streams of income which are a really effective way of ensuring financial security. Freelancing also gives you freedom that you can’t find with traditional jobs. There are many other benefits too. It’s not for everyone, but for many people freelancing is a really great fit!

What a great catch, Sabina! Once you dive into any specific area of freelancing gig, you could see yourself as an expert at multiple things – the beauty of freelancing. It’s available for everyone, but not many can fit into it.
